Book of James scripture and Devotional 08/21/2020
James 1:19-27: 19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. 21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. 26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. 27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
James 1:19-27 Devotional
James 1:19 is so important to how we are to respond when we are confronted with a problem, a disagreement, constructive criticism, or even when we are falsely accused. It is human nature to respond with anger and be defensive but we must not do this and James 1:19 clearly tells us this! We must have self-control some versions say quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. how we respond to conflict is vital and the key to shining the light and love of God and Jesus. Then it goes on to say for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Righteousness is being morally right with God and set apart from the rest of the world. So you can see, how getting angry easily definitely doesn’t show the righteousness of God. The goal of a Christan is to become more and more like Jesus to work on our temper daily, I often pray to James 1:19 because it is something we can all learn to do better. Are words could make or break relationships. We will never be as righteous as God ever isn’t possible but we can grow within our attempt to become more holy and righteous. The next verse 23 is so true we must not only be hearers of the word but we must be doers of the word. We must live it daily in our lives. In the next chapter, it talks about faith without works is dead, now I am definitely not saying that we are saved by faith not even a little but we are saved by faith alone through Christ alone but we must produce works because we are so faithful. I want you to notice verse 26 uses the word bridleth and you might be thinking what does bridleth mean? Well, according to av1611.com/ it means “A restraint; a curb; a check.” on our tongues meaning we must restrain, and check what we say as Christians because once you become a Christian you are no longer of this world so people will find any way to discredit you as you grow more and more in tune with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Finally, it beautifully tells us what true religion is to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to do it because we love them and want to not so we can boast about it later.
