Daily preaching 1/25/2019
“At an altar of prayer, I met Jesus With compassion, He welcomed me there And my burdens so heavy were lifted When we met at an altar of prayer.” Are lyrics many Christans, Christ followers, and God lovers sing throughout the local churches, but what is an alter? So, with that in mind today, I want to talk to you about the altar. What an altar is, the meaning behind the alter, and how we can come to know God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit at the alter.
What is an alter? An alter is “A mount; a table or elevated place, on which sacrifices where anciently offered to some deity. Altars were originally made of turf, afterwards of stone, wood or horn; some were round, others square, others triangular.” The alter is the place right in front of where the pastor preaching the word of God. The pastor stands in front of what is known as the pulpit. A pulpit is “a raised platform or lectern in a church or chapel from which the preacher delivers a sermon.”
“an Altar of prayer is a meeting point between God and man, where God is ready to communicate with you as a father would with his son. It is a place where you can get anything the word of God says has been freely given to you by reason of redemption by the blood of Jesus.”
Genesis Chapter 8:20-22
20 And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart [is] evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. 22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
What this is saying in Noah build an alter to Worship the LORD, and took every clean beast meaing everyone who confessed of sin, misdeeds, wrongdoings and repented at the alter. Took every clean flow, a flow is a
“flying or winged animal; the generic name of certain animals that move through the air by the aid of wings. Fowls have two feet, are covered with feathers, and have wings for flight.” A Burt offering “The burnt offering is one of the oldest and most common offerings in …history… The Hebrew word for “burnt offering” actually means to “ascend,“ literally to “go up in smoke.” The smoke from the sacrifice ascended to God, “a soothing aroma to the LORD” (Leviticus 1:9). Technically, any offering burned over an altar was a burnt offering, but in more specific terms, a burnt offering was the complete destruction of the animal (except for the hide) in an effort to renew the relationship between Holy God and sinful man. With the development of the law, God gave the Israelites specific instructions as to the types of burnt offerings and what they symbolized.” So bassicaly a burt offering is surrendering your whole life to the LORD. The LORD smelled a good sweet savor meaning taste and enjoy it completely. The LORD new in his heart that Good things were being done in his name by Noah.
Hebrews 13:7-13 Context
7Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation. 8Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. 9Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. 10We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. 11For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. 12Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. 13Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.
The Alter is a place where we can come to know God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit! People we need to repent for our sins, Repent meaning (feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one’s wrongdoing or sin.) We need to let people know that they are living in sin. There are plenty of people who do GOOD THINGS, but ARENT LIVING RIGHT WITH GOD, JESUS, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. We need to pray for our loved ones, we need to invite people to church, we need to plant the seed. People do it now before it is too late. One day your loved ones will die and you will be sorry you didn’t forgive them in the first place!
